Shared reality didn’t simply erode on its own. Over decades, certain political and social movements normalized distortion to advance agendas that couldn’t withstand factual scrutiny. What began at the margins became sophisticated—and effective.

More recently, systems evolved that rewarded speed, outrage, and identity over accuracy. Distortion spreads faster than correction. Falsehoods are easier to repeat than truth is to establish. 

Shared understanding—shared reality—has fragmented.

When Reality Loses Its Grip

When false narratives harden into identity, entire constituencies become unreachable by evidence. 

Power operates without correction—norms broken, the rule of law weakened, institutions hollowed—not by force alone, but by permission granted through falsehood and sustained distortion.

A Different Kind of Response

Commitment to fact and evidence already exists across political and cultural lines. That diffuse but real alignment forms a broader "reality-based community"— one that exists whether or not it calls itself that.

The Reality-Based Community (RBC) exists to make that alignment visible and consequential.

As the broader reality-based community gains visibility, legitimacy becomes harder to sustain without grounding in reality—and reality-based standards begin to reassert themselves.

The card is the first step in a broader effort to make those standards visible and consequential.
